Penn State University and Ursinus College Announce Joint Agreements in Software Engineering and Computer Science Programs
COLLEGEVILLE, PA -- May 19, 2003 -- Ursinus College and Penn State Great Valley, the School of Graduate Professional Studies, today announced a formal collaboration that will encourage qualified graduates of three Ursinus programs to continue their studies in a Penn State Great Valley master's degree program in Information Science or Software Engineering.
The eligible students are:
- Graduates of the evening bachelor's in Business Administration program, who elect iCarnegie's Software Development curriculum as their major by successfully completing the 10 iCarnegie courses that lead to iCarnegie Certificates in Computer Programming and Software Systems Development;
- Other professionals who already hold appropriate bachelor of science degrees and who complete the five iCarnegie courses that lead to an iCarnegie Certificate in Computer Programming;
- Graduates of the Ursinus College bachelor's degree in Computer Science program.
Under the arrangement, Ursinus students from those categories who have completed their baccalaureate degree program with an overall cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better and a GPA of 3.0 or better in the major or iCarnegie courses will be granted preferred admission to either the Penn State Master of Software Engineering or Master of Science in Information Science degree program.
Such students must apply to the degree program of choice using Penn State Great Valley's application materials and following the required application procedure. Ursinus graduates enrolling in the Penn State programs may be required to complete a course in computer architecture.
Dr. David Russell, Penn State Professor and Engineering Department Division Chairman, said "Ursinus College students with these credentials represent the type of students we seek for our graduate programs in Software Engineering and Information Science, and we are excited about bringing these students into our graduate programs, once they have completed their iCarnegie and Ursinus requirements."
Ellen Matthews, Director of The Center for Continuous Learning at Ursinus, remarked that "we are pleased that graduates of Ursinus College computer science curriculum, as well as students taking the highly regarded iCarnegie courses in programming and software development, can continue their education under this articulation agreement with Penn State."
The Center for Continuous Learning at Ursinus has been granting undergraduate degrees to adult students for over 50 years and has partnerships with two other leading Universities. Saint Joseph's University offers part-time Masters degrees at the Ursinus campus in Business and Health Administration.
The Center is also in its third year in partnership with iCarnegie, Inc., an educational affiliate of Carnegie Mellon University and its renowned software development program. The iCarnegie curriculum in computer programming and software development is offered at Ursinus, either as part of the bachelor's degree or as a stand-alone certification program.
"We are very pleased that Penn State University has recognized the value of the iCarnegie curriculum, its breadth and applicability in today's software development world, and is building upon our partnership with Ursinus College," said Allan Fisher, iCarnegie President and CEO. "Through this new collaboration, the value provided to students -- and their employers -- leverages the combined resources of Ursinus, Penn State, iCarnegie, and Carnegie Mellon."
